STARTING MY OWN BUSINESS

Starting my first business after many years of salaried work in music has been completely worth it.

For over 20 years I was a professional in the music & entertainment industry. I've worked for giant corporations and scrappy indies—always as part of a team, always with a safety net. But deciding, in my 40’s, to step out on my own, to be fully responsible for every decision, every success, and every stumble? It’s been as thrilling as it’s been overwhelming.

There have been countless sleepless nights, and I’m sure there’ll be many more. Many saboteurs in my head: What if I don’t make it? What if I can’t replace my corporate salary? What if no one hires me? What if I'm a failure? Will people laugh at me?

Running your own business means there’s no real switch-off. It’s passion-fuelled, relentless, and it consumes everything. It can also be lonely. There’s no water cooler chat, no “How was your weekend?” catch-ups. But that’s where the coaching community comes in—this incredible group of people who lift each other up, share insights, and make the whole process a little less isolating. They’ve been my safety net when I’ve stumbled through the legal maze of setting up an LLC or finding the right insurance. I couldn’t ask for better support.

Yet, despite the long hours and the doubts that creep in, I wouldn’t change a thing. I love not having a boss breathing down my neck. I love not having to fight to have my ideas heard, as I’m the only decision maker, and of course I take my own ideas seriously! I love the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them and the constant self-growth. But most of all, I love how aligned I now feel in my business with my core values—courage, curiosity, and authenticity. It’s fulfilling in a way that my past jobs never were.

This journey—full of growth, freedom, and resilience—has shown me what I’m truly capable of. And now, as I help women in music find their own clarity and purpose, I know, without a doubt, this is what I’m meant to do.

Yes, starting my own business has been tough. Yes, there’s still so much I’m figuring out. But would I trade it for anything? Absolutely not. I’ve never been happier or more certain that I’m doing what I was always meant to do.

If you’re a woman in music thinking about a career change, starting your own business for the first time, or transitioning from full-time employment to consulting, I’m here to help you navigate those waters.
