MISOGYNY IN MUSIC?
In January the UK House of Commons, Women & Equalities Committee issued a report that said, “Women working in the music industry face limitations in opportunity, a lack of support, gender discrimination and sexual harassment and assault as well as the persistent issue of unequal pay in a sector dominated by self-employment and gendered power imbalances.”
I feel really validated by this conclusion. This was my experience in the music industry, and I know it’s been the experience of a lot of other women. This is the core reason that I am passionate about coaching women, and I help a lot of women working in the music industry.
What I find interesting is that this statement seems to have so far attracted little pushback, or in fact commentary at all, that I’ve personally seen.
This makes me hopeful that what I used to face all alone when I worked in the music industry, (and what so many of my clients feel like they’re facing all alone before they start coaching with me), is now being acknowledged on a wider scale. Because recognising it publicly is going to be the first step towards changing it.
Will this at last be the turning point that the industry needs? Could real meaningful change for women in music at long last happen?
Do you work in the music industry; did you read about this report?
