CHASING THE WIN? REMEMBER YOUR JOURNEY

I’m not really into sport. I’ve never understood how a win or a loss could make or break someone’s day. But yesterday, I watched Newcastle United vs Liverpool; and for the first time, I got it.

With a Geordie wife, I was rooting for the underdog, as I often do. I also knew how much it would mean to her if they won.

And they did win, and after 70 years, The Magpies lifted a domestic cup! The roar of the crowd was deafening. A sea of black and white shirts moved like waves. Local boy, Sam Fender blasted through the stadium, with fans singing along. And I wept. Not just misty-eyed, but proper ugly tears. Because I knew what it meant to my wife, her family, and the city of Newcastle.

Turns out, the result of a football match (or soccer for my American friends), really can matter.

Later, I walked through the park with the scent of spring in the air, thinking about how long some people wait for their moment. How much resilience it takes to keep showing up, even when the odds feel stacked against them.

I see this in coaching. Women in music pushing for years, doing the work, waiting for their moment. When it comes, it’s never just about the win. It’s about everything that got them there; the risks, the late nights, the doubts and the people who believed in them.

If you need to hear this today, your moment’s coming. But while you’re chasing what’s next, don’t forget how far you’ve come.
