ARE YOU AN UNDERDOG?
Since moving to California, I’m mesmerized by the hummingbirds here.
They are magical. Tiny little birds that dart around my garden, seemingly without a care in the world. Collecting the sugar water from the feeders and visiting the various brightly coloured flowers. They don’t seem to realise that being that small is a disadvantage, with so many larger predators who could easily attack them.
Despite hummingbirds arguably being underdogs, they’ve found a way to thrive which I find so inspiring. They have a joy and feistiness to them that I admire. Even though they have a lot of challenges they don’t limit their possibilities and enjoyment in life.
One of my coaching clients self-identifies as an underdog. She’s had to work hard to be where she is in her career, and it’s helped her build gusto, grit and determination.
She’s a woman working in music, in a very male dominated sub-sector - which puts her at a disadvantage. But she’s unapologetic about who she is and what she wants to achieve in her career. Despite feeling that every day she must climb a mountain.
Through coaching with me she has understood how to leverage being the underdog to get what she wants. In a few short months she has grown even further in confidence and self-belief, and I can’t wait to see where it takes her.
