A LETTER TO MONEY
💰 Ever written a letter to money? Neither had I… but Susan Payton's book inspired me to do so.
Dear Money,
I never really had you growing up. You were always in the background; something my parents stressed over, talked about behind closed doors, and feared. You were something to be careful with, something we never had enough of.
So, I learned to be careful with you too. I saved. I never wasted. I never took risks with you. There was no joy in our relationship; just caution. Just judgement.
And then I saw how you shape the world around me:
💰 Women don’t have as much of you as men doing the same job. How is that still a thing?
💰 It’s considered rude to talk about you, yet you control so much. Why?
💰 You’re used to measure someone’s worth; as if success is just a number. Strange, right?
You had a hold on me; on my choices, my dreams, the places I could travel to, the clothes I could wear.
But as I got older, I started to understand you more and I decided I wanted a different relationship with you.
I didn’t want to be so cautious. I wanted to enjoy you; I wanted to buy a WrenSilva record player, travel to the Bahamas, and stop worrying about you. I wanted to make you work for me - not the other way around.
I wanted to start my own coaching business, to control how much of you I bring in, on my terms.
You’ve been a source of security and stress. You’ve given me freedom, but also fear. And still, I wonder; why can’t we all have the same amount of you?
I’m still figuring you out.
Yours (with complicated feelings),
Sarah
